What is azara agouti?

Azara's agouti (Dasyprocta azarae) is a species of rodent native to eastern and southeastern South America, primarily in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. They live in forests and grasslands, and are known for their distinctive reddish-brown fur, which is darker on the back and lighter on the underparts.

Azara's agouti is a medium-sized rodent, weighing between 2.5 and 4 kg, with a body length of around 40 cm. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, and insects.

Azara's agouti is a solitary animal, but they occasionally mate for life. They are known for their ability to jump up to 2 meters in height and up to 3 meters in length, making them excellent tree climbers and escape artists.

Azara's agouti has a conservation status of "least concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), although they are threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion. They are also hunted for their meat and fur. The species is protected in some countries, including Brazil and Uruguay.
